Best Day Trips from Hoi An: 15 Tours Compared by Time, Budget and Season

Golden Bridge at Ba Na Hills

Hoi An is small, but the list of tours around it is long, and every hotel lobby has a rack of brochures that all look the same. After helping a lot of travellers choose, I’ve noticed the mistake is rarely picking a bad tour. It’s picking the wrong tour for the time, the season or the person. This guide compares the best day trips from Hoi An side by side: how long they take, what they cost, when they work, and, honestly, who should skip them.

Half-Day Tours from Hoi An

Round basket boats in the Cam Thanh coconut forest near Hoi An
Basket boats in the coconut forest, 15 minutes from the Old Town.

Basket boat in the coconut forest

The quickest taste of the countryside: 40 to 60 minutes in a round bamboo boat through the Bay Mau coconut forest, a bit of crab fishing and the famous spinning show. Skip it if you want something calm and quiet; the main channel is lively and noisy. Combine it with a cooking class for a better half day.

Cooking class with market and basket boat

Market, basket boat and five dishes in one morning or afternoon. It’s the half day that most travellers tell me was their favourite, and it works in any weather. Skip it if you’ve already done a cooking class elsewhere in Vietnam and want something new; try the coffee or lantern class instead.

Marble Mountains and Son Tra

Caves, pagodas and the 67-metre Lady Buddha on Monkey Mountain, in a morning (with lunch) or an afternoon. There are stairs, so wear proper shoes. Skip it if you’re staying in Da Nang for a few days anyway; you can do it from there.

My Son Sanctuary

The UNESCO-listed Cham temples in a green valley, with a Cham dance and a boat ride back on the Thu Bon River. Choose the morning tour to beat the heat or the sunset tour for the light. Skip it if you expect Angkor Wat; My Son is smaller and partly ruined, and its beauty is in the atmosphere and the story.

Kayak, SUP, bicycle and Vespa

These are the “move with your own body” options. The kayak tours range from a sunrise paddle to the fish market to a sunset paddle into the lantern town. The bicycle tours go through villages and rice fields at an easy pace. The Vespa tours put you on the back of a vintage scooter with an experienced rider, in the morning, afternoon or evening. Skip them if it’s pouring with rain; they’re much better on a dry day.

Son Tra snorkeling

A speedboat to the coves of Son Tra Peninsula, snorkeling, kayak and lunch with a family, in about five hours. Skip it from October to February, when the sea is often rough.

Full-Day Tours from Hoi An

The Golden Bridge held by giant stone hands at Ba Na Hills
The Golden Bridge at Ba Na Hills, best on a clear day.

Ba Na Hills and the Golden Bridge

The Golden Bridge, the cable car, the French village and the gardens, as a full day with buffet lunch or a shorter afternoon. The cable car ticket is paid separately. Skip it if the forecast is cloudy: at around 1,400 m the park is often inside the clouds, and you may see fog instead of the bridge. Also skip it if theme parks aren’t your thing; it is more of a resort than a nature trip.

Marble Mountains and My Son in one day

Two classics in one full day, with lunch at a family home, a Cham dance and a sunset boat ride back to Hoi An. Good value if you have little time. Skip it if you prefer a slower pace; doing them on two separate half days is more relaxed.

Hue day trip

Brick Cham temples at My Son Sanctuary surrounded by jungle
My Son Sanctuary, one of the easiest half days from Hoi An.

Khai Dinh Tomb, the Imperial Citadel and Thien Mu Pagoda in one long day of about 12 hours, crossing the scenery around the Hai Van Pass. Skip it if you are going to Hue next anyway; then the Easy Rider or a one-way private car with stops is a smarter way to travel and sightsee at once.

Da Nang private tour

Marble Mountains, Son Tra, the Cham Museum and Han Market with your own guide and car, lunch and tickets included. Skip it if you’re on a tight budget; the group half-day tour covers the two main sights for much less.

Cham Island diving and snorkeling

Two snorkeling sites, a try dive or fun dives for certified divers, and lunch on the beach. Wonderful in the calm months. Skip it from September to February unless the forecast is perfect: boats are often suspended. My Cham Island self-guided guide explains the weather rules.

Multi-Day Trips

Ly Son Island is a 2-day volcanic island trip with sunset at To Vo Gate and sunrise on Thoi Loi Mountain, best in the calm season. The Easy Rider to Hue is technically a one-way transfer, but with the Marble Mountains, the Hai Van Pass, Lang Co beach and a fishing village on the way, it’s really a tour.

Which Tour Should You Pick? Choose by Situation

  • You have only one free day: cooking class in the morning, My Son sunset tour in the afternoon. Food, culture, countryside and a boat ride, with no long drive.
  • You have two free days: Ba Na Hills on the clearest day, and Marble Mountains + My Son on the other.
  • You travel with kids: basket boat, lantern boat in the evening, and Ba Na Hills for the rides. Keep long drives like Hue for older children.
  • You are on a budget: basket boat ($6.3 (≈ 165,000₫) without pick-up), Marble Mountains afternoon ($20 (≈ 520,000₫)) and My Son sunset ($20 (≈ 520,000₫)).
  • It’s the rainy season (October to December): cooking class, My Son and Marble Mountains work in most weather; save Ba Na for a clear day and skip the sea. See Hoi An in November for a rain plan.
  • You want something nobody else does: a sunrise kayak to the fish market, or the Vespa countryside ride.

One rule I always give friends: don’t book two long drives back to back. Hue (12 hours) followed by Ba Na Hills the next day leaves you exhausted and with little time for Hoi An itself. Put a half day or a free day in between. If you want help building the mix, message us on WhatsApp +84 903 532 168.

How Booking Works

Every tour above has its own page with all the options, what’s included and a Check price button. You can book directly with us, ask us to contact you, or book online through a partner at the same price. After booking we confirm on WhatsApp, usually within 15 minutes, and send the pick-up time the evening before. For sea and mountain trips we will tell you honestly if the weather makes the day not worth it.

Many of these trips go to places with long histories, like My Son Sanctuary, built by the Champa kingdom between the 4th and 13th centuries. A good guide makes a big difference there.

Final Thoughts

The best day trip from Hoi An depends on three things: how many days you have, the weather that week and what you enjoy. Start with the half days close to town, keep the long trips for clear days, check the sea season before any island, and leave space for Hoi An itself. You can see every option on our tours and activities page.
