Cham Island Self-Guided Trip from Hoi An: Weather, Boats and 6 Tips

Fishing boats on turquoise water off the central Vietnam coast

Doing a Cham Island self-guided trip from Hoi An is easier than most people think: a short ride to Cua Dai pier, a boat across, a simple homestay and a rented motorbike. What decides whether it is a great trip or a stressful one is mostly the weather and a few rules that many visitors, especially international travelers, don’t know about. I’m Vincent from Hoi An Fairy Tour, and here is everything I’d tell a friend before they go.

I. Cham Island Weather: When to Go (and When Not To)

Cham Island is a cluster of islands in the open sea, so the trip depends completely on the sea. As a rule of thumb:

MonthsSeaMy advice
March – AugustCalm, clear water, sunnyThe best time for a day trip or an overnight stay
SeptemberChanging, first storms possibleGo, but check the forecast every day
October – DecemberStorms and the northeast monsoon, rough seaBoats are often suspended. Not recommended, especially overnight
January – FebruaryCool, sometimes choppyPossible on clear days, the island is quiet and beautiful

The part most people miss: every boat going in and out of Cham Island is controlled by the Border Guard. When the weather turns bad, they simply don’t allow boats to leave, and that applies to the way back too. If you go out during an unstable season, you can get stuck on the island for one or several days with no boat home. Annoying if you have a free week, a real problem if you have a flight to catch. In the shoulder months, keep at least one buffer day before your next booking.

For international travelers: before you book, ask the ticket seller clearly about the conditions to stay overnight on the island for your nationality. Rules for foreign guests can differ, and some nationalities may only be allowed on a day trip. Ask first, it saves a lot of trouble at the pier.

II. What to Pack for Cham Island

The island is small and simple, so bring what you need from Hoi An:

  • Passport or ID card (the original). This is the one thing you cannot forget. You show it at the checkpoint at the pier, and your homestay needs it to register your stay with the local authorities. A photo on your phone is often not enough.
  • Cash in VND. Many small places on the island don’t take cards, so don’t count on paying by card.
  • Sun protection. Hat, sunglasses and sunscreen (reef-friendly if you can). There is little shade on the boat and on the beaches.
  • Swimwear and a light towel, plus a thin jacket for the evening and the boat ride.
  • A dry bag for your phone and documents on the speedboat.
  • Seasickness pills if you get sick easily. The speedboat can bounce a lot.
  • A cloth or paper bag. Plastic bags are not allowed on the island (more on that below).

III. How to Get to Cham Island by Yourself

Fishing boats and clear water: what you see as the island gets closer.

Step 1: Get to Cua Dai pier

All boats leave from Cua Dai pier, near the Renaissance Hoi An Resort, about 8–10 km from the Old Town. You have two easy options:

  • Taxi. The simplest way, especially with luggage. You can book a private taxi at a fixed price for the morning boat.
  • Motorbike. Just as easy. Ride to the pier and leave your bike in the parking lot, which also keeps bikes overnight for only a few tens of thousands of dong. No bike yet? Rent a scooter delivered to your hotel.

Step 2: Choose your boat

I don’t list exact departure times here on purpose: schedules change with the season and the weather. Check the times again with the people at the pier or with your homestay the day before.

IV. Where to Stay on Cham Island

Almost all accommodation on the island is homestays run by island families, mostly around Bai Lang (near the port) and Bai Huong. Rooms are clean and simple: a fan or air conditioning, a bed, sometimes a balcony. Don’t expect the variety of hotels you have in Hoi An, and you will enjoy it much more.

  • Booking platforms (OTAs) show the main homestays with photos and reviews, handy to compare.
  • Contacting the homestay directly often gets you a better price and useful extras such as a motorbike for the day, meals or a snorkeling trip.

I shared the homestay I stayed in, with prices, in my Cham Island travel guide.

V. What to Do and Eat on Cham Island

Clear water and soft sand: the island beaches at their best.

Things to do

  • Snorkeling and diving. The island is a marine protected area with coral and colorful fish. Join a snorkeling trip from the island, or do it all in one day with our diving and snorkeling tour at Cham Island.
  • The beaches. Bai Ong has cafés, showers and shade. Bai Xep is quiet and lovely for swimming. Bai Chong is wilder, with coconut trees and big rocks.
  • A ride around the island. Rent a motorbike from your homestay and follow the coast road. The views over the sea are the best part of the day.
  • Sunset and sunrise. Catch the sunset from the west side of the island and wake up early for the sunrise at Eo Gio.
  • The fishing village. Walk around Bai Lang, the morning market, the old Cham well and Hai Tang Pagoda.

What to eat

Seafood is the reason to eat on Cham Island: grilled fish, squid, shellfish and snails, fresh from the boats that morning. I ate at Ốc Đảo and loved it, so it’s my first tip. If you’d rather have something familiar, the restaurants along the beach also serve simple Vietnamese and Western dishes, many with an English menu.

Just keep your expectations right: the choice of food on the island will never match the mainland. Eat seafood, enjoy it, and save the pizza for Hoi An.

VI. Things to Know Before You Go

Island life is simple: fishing boats, quiet beaches, early nights.
  • It is a wild island, not a party island. Cham Island is for people who love nature, clear water and the simple life of a fishing village. There are no clubs, no shopping streets and no nightlife like on the mainland. Come for that peace, not for entertainment.
  • No plastic bags. Single-use plastic bags are not allowed on the island. Pack your things in a cloth bag, a backpack or a paper bag.
  • Respect the reef. Don’t stand on or touch the coral, and don’t take shells or coral home.
  • Weather beats plans. If the Border Guard stops the boats, nobody can change it. Keep your plans flexible.

Cham Island is part of the Cu Lao Cham–Hoi An Biosphere Reserve recognized by UNESCO, which is exactly why these rules exist.

Summary: Is a Self-Guided Cham Island Trip Right for You?

  • Yes, if you travel between March and August, like quiet beaches and seafood, and don’t mind simple rooms.
  • Go as a day trip if your schedule is tight or the forecast looks uncertain.
  • Skip or postpone in the stormy months, or if you can’t afford to get stuck for a day.
